Our research is designed to promote the transformation of mental health care by increasing knowledge of supports, services, and policies that:

  • Build on family strengths;
  • Are community based, family driven, and youth guided;
  • Promote cultural competence; and
  • Are based on evidence of effectiveness.

Training

The Research and Training Center serves as a national resource on improvement of mental health services to children and families. Major efforts in dissemination and training include:

  • An annual national conference, Building on Family Strengths, highlighting research and innovative programs on family-centered services;

  • Focal Point, a national bulletin on family support and children's mental health;

  • Publications discussing state-of-the-art approaches to service delivery and policy-making in children's mental health. For publication information, or to subscribe to Focal Point, Email: rtcpubs@pdx.edu

  • The Underrepresented Researchers Mentoring Program offers undergraduate and graduate students research opportunities and training. The project coordinates and evaluates a program targeted towards students who are from groups underrepresented in children's mental health research. It is designed to encourage students to pursue an interest in research and to acquire a variety of research skills and experiences.

  • Families as Evaluators is evaluating a curriculum developed by the Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health to train and support family members involved in evaluation. It will also develop a parallel training for evaluators who collaborate with family members.

  • Together with thirteen partner organizations, the Research and Training Center participates in a Learning Community to exchange and disseminate up-to-date information on debates and developments in the field of Children's Mental Health. As part of this effort, the Research and Training Center at Portland State University and the Research and Training Center at the University of South Florida produce Data Trends, which is a series of one-page briefs addressing current themes, summarizing recent articles, or presenting new developments in the field.
